THE CATARUGA SPIRIT

A Reinvented Vision of Sailing

Sail differently, think differently
Cataruga is not just a boatbuilder. It is an independent house, built on a clear and deeply human vision: to make sailing a true art of living, a space of renewed freedom and a harmonious bond between people and the sea.

At the origin of this project is Jean Sommereux, an engineer by training and an inspired creator. After an initial entrepreneurial venture in high-end outdoor furniture (EGO Paris), he embarked on a four-year voyage aboard a schooner. This formative experience sharpened his sensitivity to comfort, the fluidity of maneuvers, and the integrity of materials. From this inner and maritime journey emerged Cataruga the expression of a personal and universal quest.

« To realize one’s Personal Legend is a person’s only real obligation.. »
Paolo COELO

Cataruga, true to this spirit, designs and builds catamarans for those who choose to sail differently, in search of harmony and freedom.

The union of purpose, technology, and life
Cataruga is built on three fundamental pillars:

  • Refined innovation, focused on usability and simplicity
  • Rigorous eco-design, mindful of the impact of every decision
  • A human commitment, valuing artisanal know-how and the sharing of skills

We believe it is possible — and necessary — to invent a new way of experiencing the sea: gentler, more mindful, and more comfortable. Cataruga builds boats so that everyone can, in their own way, color their legend.

The dream of one man, the achievement of a team

Jean Sommereux is an engineer graduated from Arts et Métiers and co-founder of EGO Paris, a high-end outdoor furniture brand. For more than fifteen years, he honed a deep expertise in aluminum, developed a rigorous approach to design, and nurtured a singular vision: to combine technical precision, elegance, and durability to create objects that stand the test of time.

Guided by the call of the open sea, he chose to live aboard Whisky IV, a 12-meter schooner that became his floating school for four years. As he sailed, he discovered the very essence of a boat: the fluidity of maneuvers, the comfort of movement, resilience against the elements, and the simplicity of everyday life.

From this experience, CATARUGA was born. In collaboration with Jean-Michel Kalfon, a designer passionate about sailing and pure, elegant lines, they shared a vision of a reinvented yachting experience and brought the Turtle 147 to life.
